Well, there is nothing like arriving at work on a Tuesday morning to hear that your team was expecting you to be there THE DAY BEFORE, because that is what is posted on the calendar, and oh, by the way, they really needed you because of some unforeseen circumstances. Gosh, I'm so sorry for the mix-up. To make sure this doesn't happen again, I just went over this month's calendar, and I think I have it right now. And to think I was just going about my day, with my head in the clouds, exercising, teaching, and even GOING TO A MOVIE!! Guilt sets in. Big time.
Now that I'm here in the library, I'm amazed at how peaceful and quiet it is! The "season" must be officially over, which means that the snowbirds have gone back to their northern homes. They give our economy a boost (a huge one!) and we appreciate them, but boy, is it ever nice to drive all over town without a traffic worry! So freeing! So here we are, in May, with a nice little breather before the craziness of the summer starts. I am referring to the huge number of children who will soon be invading our space (okay, not really invading, I mean we ARE a public library, but it can FEEL like an invasion!) with hopes of attending one of the wonderful children's programs our youth librarians present. Ah, to hear the pitter patter of little feet makes my heart happy, even though it means more work for the circulation team because more things (especially youth items) will be checked OUT by patrons and then checked IN by our team.
One more thing before signing off: How was everyone's Mother's Day? It is a bit bittersweet for many of us, I know. Not all mother/child relationships have turned out the way we expected. At least it's behind us now. Father's Day, here we come! :-) Oh, joy!

hot 'n dusty
Yes, it's hot 'n dusty. No, not the library, sillies! I'm referring to the surrounding land. What the heck is going on out there? Progress? Development? Road construction? Detouring? All of the above! I'm sure it will all be attractive once the dust settles (literally and figuratively!), but right now, it's just plain dusty around our library. And hot. Did I mention it's hot? And humid and muggy. We went from a perfect springtime temperature to full-on summer in 2 days. We'll all get used to it as the summer wears on, but right now, most of us are a bit uncomfortable and would welcome some of those famous thunderstorms! Bring 'em on!
BTW, I love my co-workers! In the wonderful series, "My So-Called Life", starring a young and lovely Claire Danes, one episode's closing line went something like this: "People are so complicated that it makes them all beautiful". That's just how I feel about you guys, and you know who I'm talking about: each and every one of you! You are cherished! :-))

pizza!
Folks, we are just plain lucky! The Friends of the library treated us to pizza, salad, garlic rolls, and soda yesterday, and based on how content everyone has seemed ever since, we certainly are a foodie bunch of employees! Not that we didn't all know that already! If our tummies are full, we are generally a very happy group, and nothing fills one up like pizza on a Monday afternoon at the office. The best part? There were enough leftovers to feed us on Tuesday as well. All I have to say is YUMMY!! Our Friends are awesome! Thank you so much!

workin workin
This past weekend, we had a "nature day" at the library, which was more fun than I've had at work in quite a while! Considering I have fun every day at my job at the library, this is quite a declaration! On a quick break from covering the youth department desk while the youth team was busy, I ventured outside. To my utter delight, I was greeted with the strong smell of ANIMALS in our field. Yes, real, live animals here at our humble library! I visited with a sow, a cow, 2 pygmy goats, a LLAMA (I loved him! His name was Superman!), some bunnies, a blue-tongued skink (yikes!), a horse (quite large!), and a farmer named Donny. The library, the reading garden, and the field adjacent to the building were all teeming with people of all ages enjoying the gorgeous weather, the sights and smells of animals, and the taste of freshly popped movie theater-style popcorn. So fun!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's really amazing how being close to nature perks us up. I found our patrons on our nature day to be in exceptionally good moods, and I found myself smiling for most of my shift as well. The day was a fabulous success and I'm so proud of my co-workers for helping organize such an extravaganza. Now I'm working on a mundane Monday, but the memories of last Saturday are keeping me all warm and fuzzy inside. I just love my job's challenges and surprises. Working in the library is fulfilling and I look forward to it every day.
